The impact of predation on Helicoverpa armigera was studied in four field cage exclusion trials on cotton in Kenya. H. armigera egg cohorts were introduced inside predator‐free and open control cages, and the impact of local predator populations on the cohort was examined. Fourteen days after inoculation, exclusion cages had four times more larvae than controls, indicating a strong impact of predation. Ants and Anthocoridae were the predominant predator groups. Exclusion cages had more damaged fruiting plant parts (squares, flowers and bolls) than the control. In the absence of predators, natural mortality of H. armigera was greater as cotton matured, and is likely to be linked to the host plant condition.  相似文献

In three field experiments in Kenya , the seasonal population trend of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (= Heliothis armigera) in sunflower was followed in plots from which predators were excluded and in plots from which predators were not excluded . In experiment 1 , complete exclusion of crawling predators (predominantly Pheidole spp . of ants occurring at densities of 25 per plant) resulted in H. armigera densities 3 - 5 times higher than in plots where ants were not excluded . Pheidole sp . had more impact on young H. armigera larvae (instars 2 - 3) than on older larvae (instars 4 - 6) . The results of experiment 2 were less striking , because H. armigera infestation was low , and ant densities were moderate . Here , Myrmicaria spp . and Camponotus spp . were the predominant ants . Exclusion of ants resulted in a 1 . 8 - fold increase in densities of large H. armigera instars . In experiment 3 , the impact of predators on H. armigera was studied under three conditions: exclusion of crawling predators , exclusion of both crawling and flying predators , and the control where no predators were excluded . To evaluate the role of predation in total mortality , the recruitment of H. armigera larvae was determined with Southwood and Jepson ' s graphical method , and recruitment of newly laid eggs was directly measured on trap plants . Because it was difficult to detect older eggs due to colour change , the direct measurement of egg recruitment was superior to the graphical method . Ants and Anthocoridae were the dominant predators . M ortality from egg to older larvae (instars 4 - 6) was 73 - 78% . Exclusion of ants and anthocorids did not affect the densities of H. armigera larvae . Anthocorid predators increased only after the main oviposi tion peak of H. armigera and , therefore , their exclusion had little impact on the pest . Ant density was considerably lower than in experiment 1 , and did not significantly suppress H. armigera.  相似文献

Efficient in vivo translocation of the precursor of Escherichia coli outer membrane protein PhoE across the inner membrane is shown to depend on SecB protein. A set of mutants, carrying internal deletions in the phoE gene, was used to locate a possible SecB-binding site and/or a site that makes the protein dependent on SecB for export. Except for two small mutant PhoE proteins, the in vivo and in vitro translocation of all mutant proteins was more efficient in the presence of SecB. The interaction of SecB protein with wild-type and mutant PhoE proteins, synthesized in vitro, was further studied in co-immunoprecipitation experiments with anti-SecB protein serum. The efficiencies of co-immunoprecipitation of precursor and mature PhoE were very similar, indicating the absence of a SecB-binding site in the signal sequence. Moreover, all mutant proteins with deletions in the mature moiety of the PhoE protein were co-immunoprecipitated in these assays, albeit mostly with reduced efficiency. Taken together, these results indicate the existence of multiple SecB-binding sites in the mature portion of the PhoE protein.  相似文献

In Mesocyclops edax S.A. Forbes, 2n=14, a North American copepod, the females are heterozygous for several interchanges leading to the formation of large rings of chromosomes (rings of 14, or of 12 plus 1 bivalent) at meiotic metaphase, comparable to those of the plant Oenothera, although no chiasmata are present. The chromosomes are more or less metacentric and have large terminal H-segments. In the rings homologous arms are held together by connecting fibers which insert close to the euchromatin-heterochromatin junctions. Heat sensitive pit organs in different species of snakes show various shapes. The relation between form characters and functions were analysed by means of two different research programs. This paper presents the methodological steps involved in these research programs. The first approach is called a qualitative explanation because it connects experimental data by means of qualitative statements in order to give a functional morphological explanation for the construction of the pits in respect to the behaviour of the snake. The second approach is called a quantitative explanation because the core of the explanation is a mathematical model which in its consequences explaines the construction of the pits in respect to image formation.  相似文献

Synopsis Alkaline phosphatase has been localized ultracytochemically in PMN of man with normal and elevated levels of this enzyme. Contrary to guinea-pig PMN, no activity appears to be present in the specific granules. Instead, the plasma membrane and the membrane of the endocytic vacuoles show a strong staining. However, the demonstration of this activity depends on the preparatory procedure employed for PMN isolation. the use of dextran and Ficoll-Hypaque in the isolation procedure induces a marked increase in alkaline phosphatase staining of the PMN plasma membrane. Strongly increased activity at this site has been found in PMN from cancer patients. In most of them, additional staining has been observed in atypical vesicles and sometimes in the Golgi apparatus. These findings are discussed in the light of some previously reported controversial biochemical and cytochemical data on the distribution of alkaline phosphatase in human PMN.  相似文献

Four species of Gnathusa Fenyes (G. alfacaribou Klimaszewski & Langor, G. caribou Lohse, G. eva Fenyes, and G. tenuicornis Fenyes) occur in the Nearctic and in Canada. Three species of Ocyusa Kraatz (O. asperula Casey, O. californica Bernhauer, O. canadensis Lohse), and three species of Mniusa Mulsant and Ray (M. minutissima (Klimaszewski & Langor), M. yukonensis (Klimaszewski & Godin), and M. odelli Klimaszewski & Webster, sp. n.), are known from the Nearctic and all but O. californica occur in Canada. The recently described Gnathusa minutissima Klimaszewski and Langor and Ocyusa yukonensis Klimaszewski and Godin, are transferred here to the genus Mniusa Mulsant & Rey. New provincial and state records are reported for: G. eva (Alberta), G. tenuicornis (Alberta, Oregon, and New Brunswick), O. canadensis (New Brunswick and Newfoundland), M. minutissima (New Brunswick), and M. yukonensis (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and British Columbia). The female of M. yukonensis was discovered and is illustrated for the first time. The genus Mniusa is reported for the first time from Canada and represents the first confirmed generic record for North America. Keys for identification of all Canadian species, images of body and genital structures, maps showing distribution mainly in Canada, and new bionomics data are provided.  相似文献
